Q & A
What is freeze drying?
Freeze drying, also known as lyophilisation or cryodesiccation, is a low temperature dehydration process that involves freezing the product, lowering pressure (creating a vacuum), then removing the ice by sublimation (the water molecule to transformed from solid to vapor). This is in contrast to dehydration by most conventional methods that evaporate water using heat.
How does freeze drying work?
Freeze drying is a special form of drying that removes all moisture and tends to have less of an effect on a food's taste then normal dehydration does.
How long is the shelf life?
25 - 30 years if stored properly. Freeze Dried foods last longer then dehydrated foods due to having less water in them, water is needed for bacterial growth.
Is the flavor the same?
Some say the flavor of freeze dried food is intensified
